FLW bass tournament here in Maryland this week and while driving through local ramp parking lot I noticed that numerous out of state boat trailers did not have plates/tags. Ala, Ky, Tn, NC, tags on tow vehicles but no trailer tags. Which states, if any, don't require trailer tags? Is there some waiver that these tournament boys that travel and fish numerous states have that don't require them to have trailer tags? Just curious. Here in Md there is an annual flat rate fee for trailer tags.

We don't need no stinkin tags.
Here in TN you do not need a tag for a boat under 25' I think is the law. Lets not give them any ideas I don't want to pay anymore in fees, taxes and registrations. (not that we pay alot now)

James

In Minnesota, trailers under 1500 lb. GVW get permanent tags. Just a little sticker on the frame and you're set.

Boats under 16' don't have titles. You just pay a reg. fee every two years, and it's really small.

It's really funny. When I bought my old clunker of a boat and trailer, the lady in the registration place just laughed at me when I asked about titles. She said, "Whoever's willing to pay the registration fee on your old boat is its owner." I guess you could report a stolen boat, but it's pretty darned easy to fake registration numbers, too. Anyhow...the whole process took 5 minutes and cost me $25. I love Minnesota.

Two good reasons to keep my boat small.

Missouri:

$25 for the plate on my bbq bit trailer last week. good for 3 years.

MO Titles trailers. IF you bring in a trailer from out of state taht has no title, Under 16' a inspection station can do an inspection for serial #, over 16' Hwy Patrol does the inspection and you go to DMV to get title/plates.

No late penalty on trailer renewal, this trailer hadn't been licensed in 3 years, no big deal, they just look it up and gave me a new plate.

Lets see permanent railer tag was $75. I would never have gotting the renewal notices and be stuck with a late fee otherwise. And I think 35 for the three year reg on the boat. Of course we now have a Democrat in the Gov's office and the guy lowered taxes allright but the fee went up on everything else! I really hate that guy!

Oh and every road or public project has his name on it so we know who is responisble for all the delays and screwups too. :)

G.R.I.P. Govenor Richardsons' Idiotic Projects :D

I pray you guys don't elect him president.

NC -

You have to have trailer tags and tags on gas powered boats as they register the boat and the engine as well - my guess on the engine is they do this to help you out if your engine gets stolen

There is no boat trailer tag just a trailer tag so the people from NC were in violation

Permenant trailer tags just cost me $129 in Arizona when I brought the trailer/boat here from California (16' trailer). Since the trailer had no vin number - they issued a new vin and wanted to title it as a 2005. STOP! This trailer is a 1958 just like the boat! I had to appeal three levels of AZDOT supervisors before common sense kicked in and they titled it as a 1958.

Maryland

I registered a boat and trailer in MD recently. Both were originally from Georgia, and registering both was a nightmare. Three trips to the MVA office for the trailer. You can't dial into the office directly to ask questions, and the main office in Annapolis gave inconsistent answers to my questions.  Ended up having to get my father-in-law (got the rig from him) to re-register in GA, get new paperwork, and that finally satisfied the MVA. $47.50 for a tandem trailer inspection (one time only per owner), $80.50 for Title, Registration, taxes, etc. It won't be as difficult/expensive next year, but I sure felt like I had to pay a lot of money to take it in the shorts from the state!!

GA requires trailer tags too. On older trailers, they require a law officer to inspect the trailer VIN and verify it. If it doesn't have a VIN, they will issue you one and then require the inspection to make sure it is installed. Boats require three year registrations, but titles only on newer boats.

Well, here in the tax-n-gouge you state, you have to renew the boat AND trailer every 2 years.

Only good thing is.. I can renew by the internet.
I'd rather have a root canal than wait in line at the DMV.

H.

Just had a root canal Friday - three hours. Surely the line at your DMV is shorter, and less painful.
