Boat to heavy?

Hi all,

I've a 50 HP outboard behind my boat and it runs fine when i'm alone in the boat, when there is a friend of mine with me it seems that motor will not get up to real speed.
I think it's pulling down the boat in the water or the boat just don't get high enough out of the water. (i've tried setting the motorheight ofcourse, but without any luck)

I've heard someone talking about installing trimflaps behind the boat to pull the back of the boat out of the water.
Can anyone tell me how i should fix this or the general idea of installing these things.
Should the flap be in the middle of the boat or 2 flaps of the center of the boat.
How big should they be etc.etc.

Maybe other ideas on this?

Thanks in advance!
Marc.

Try a prop with a lesser pitch. The next size down.

Re: Boat to heavy?

Take the prop to a prop shop. They can recondition it and change the pitch. For about half the price. But if you don't have a spare, I would do both.

While you are messin with your motor height, you wanna make sure that you cavitation plate is level +-1 in with the bottom of your transom. You need to pitch that prop so you run about 5000-5500rpm with a normal load. If you do go to a smaller prop, be careful not to over rev when your by yourself. GL

Kev_79

Can you explain what you mean with my cavitation plate (this is the plate just above the prop?) is in level with my transom?(i couldn't figure that one out)

What i understand is : the plate above my prop should be level with the lowest point of my boat.

Thanks!
Marc.

Cyrez,
The Cavitation plate should be even,(more or less) with the bottom of the boat, (bottom of the transom}. You know, another possibility might be there is some water saturated foam under the floor. It is amazingly heavy! Have a GREAT boating season! Bill :D

Ahoy Cyrez. Trim tabs (two: one on each side of the stern) will help lift your boat onto plane. A less expensive help can be had from a hydrofoil attached to the cavitation plate of your motor.

I agree with Sony and others, above, that your first and best move is to a shorter pitch prop.

Red sky at night, Sailor's delight.
JB :)

Re: Boat to heavy?

Thanks for all the reply's

I've been messing with prop's etc. and it got slightly better.
Actually i'm beginning to think indeed that the foam in my boat is a bit wet.
I'm not happy with this because this is a hell of a job. (taking a part my floor!!)
I will first try to use the hydrofoil on my cavitation plate and if that doesn't work i will break out the floor.
To be honest, my bodem has been floaded one time because i forget to put the plug in.
5 minutes later the boat was out of the water and 10 minutes later it was empty but maybe the foam is already been sucking up all the water.

Thanks!
I let you know the outcome.

Marc.

Re: Boat to heavy?

My thought is you have water somewhere inside your hull. My boat did the same thing a few years back when purchased, so I took a saw-za and cut out a piece of the floor. You wouldn't believe what I found. About 40 or so bottles of seltzer water. My thought is that some old guy that owned the boat years back must have put them in the hatch and over time worked themselves under the hull. Also found a set of vise grips, dog chain, and staple gun.

Cut out a small section and see for yourself what treasure you may find.
