Hi Forum, I own a 1988 Mercury 90hp outboard, 0B302485 serial number. It has a 9amp charging system thus just the rectifier block for charging. Yesterday my tach stopped working. Can someone give me a detailed troubleshooting to figure out where to begin troubleshooting this issue? I do have a digital volt meter to use. Also, does anyone have any suggestions on this issue? I go to start my motor and I hear the solenoid click when the key is turned, but when I turn the key to start nothing happens, the starter does not engage until I work the throttle lever back and forth a few times while holding the key in start position. Please give me directions and your thoughts on this also.

Thanks so much

Re: Boat Tachometer

Things to check:

-battery voltage when running at high idle (2000 or so)
-voltage from stator to rectifier (rectifier removed_A/C voltage)
-rectifier diode check with leads removed (not running)

If the charging system failed, the tach will also quit.

As far as the starting problem, check:

-voltage at battery when attempting to crank
-voltage at starter motor stud when attempting to crank

This will give us some direction.......
