Hi all, I was out with my Bayliner Capri 2001 boat running at full throttle and the propulsion just completely stopped I heard some rattling noise. The motor runs and starts fine but it will not engage in forward or reverse. I brought it home look at the engine the shift cables all seem to be fine. And then I saw that the drive lube reservoir was completely empty. I assume I am screwed because there is no lube oil in the lower unit. Can anyone confirm or give any advice.

Did you pull the plug on the drive to see what is in there?

That would be my suggested first step.

Second step would be pull the drive and start diagnosing

Ok. But it will be first time and I have basic set of tools. I'm not afraid of it but will need support. How do I get started?

If you decide to replace it yourself you will need to purchase, rent or borrow a Mercruiser Alignment Tool.
They are available on ebay.

purchase the alignment tool and gimble bearing / bellows kit on ebay. your going to need it all anyway. most likely the bellows went, took out your input shaft seal and your drive gear lube......and we are here where it went kablooey

as everyone above stated, we are here to help guide you

I think this is what I need to order but not sure. on my drive it says 1.81R and serial number 0L782675. My engine is a 4.3L Mercruiser serial number M003228.
How much money do you think this will save me if I do it myself? I don't have a lot of time to work on it and summer is flying by.

thanks for input.
