Yesterday I took out my uncles boat out for a test drive after fixing the trim tabs. Well here is the info on the boat: 1981 21' Galaxy with a 140 OMC Motor and Outdrive. Correct me if I am wrong but the motor looks like a Chevy 2.5L motor.
Well a friend and myself got the boat in and was on our way down the river. All of the gauges showed good Oil Pressure, good Temp and good Volts. After about 5 minutes of driving at 20 MPh in 18ft of water the boat came to a very quick stop and the the motor instantly stopped too. After alot of swearing we tried to start the motor and the starter just clanks. After a few minutes we found that the engine was locked. I had no indication of any knocking or noise of any kind that sounded irregular before hand. I can't turn the engine over by hand with a rachet on the crank, I even pulled the plugs to see if I could turn it over with them out, no luck. So could it be a Timing chain?? Or maybe the motor is locked up?? I guess it is a hard question to answer but has anyone experienced this??

Thanks,
Jeremy

It may be the outdrive and not the engine. Yes the 3.0 is a GM engine and has an excellent track record. They usually do not lock up without warning.

I don't know if it is the lower unit. With the boat in neutral the prop will spin freely. If I put the boat in forward or reverse the prop will not move. I can't get the motor to crank in neutral at all.

Jeremy

One thing's for sure. You're gonna need to pull the leg off to help diagnose your trouble. Hard to say, ya might have spun a coupler or something even more drastic. Pull the leg and take ya a look see.

Prop is not supposed to move when drive is in gear unless you put a whole lot of force on it...

Dont worry about the lingo, I did not know what a leg was either... Its the sterndrive.....
If you pull the plugs out you should be able to turn the prop and engine by hand if the boat is in gear....

"Leg" means the stern drive unit. You need to remove it so you can determine whether the problem is with that...or with the engine.

Walt

Ok, Well I guess I'll have to pull the stern drive unit and see. Is it hard to pull it off?? I worked on cars as a mechanic for several years but I haven't worked on to many boats.
