Boat Steering Slop question

I have a few inches 4-5" of play in my wheel. I looked under the helm, while my fiance moved the wheel. When she moved the wheel when it "plays" and doesn't move the motor the rack seems to move a little bit. If she keeps turning the wheel and makes the out drive move the it doesn't move or make as much noise. Any suggestions? Can I tighten something on the rack so it stops moving?

Thanks in advance,

Some R&P steering units have an adjustment screw to control the play. In any case make sure the bolts holding the rack are tight and the bushings in the pinon are not worn out or missing.

Sounds like something is loose or worn. What type of model is it, how old and can you see where the play is at?
