Boat Steering Question...Need Advice

I have an older (1998) bass boat. I've noticed the last few times out that the steering just doesn't quite seem right. It seems a little loose and has a small "catch" in it when I'm turning the wheel. I've visually inspected under the steering wheel and at the motor, but see no problems. The rest of the cable is in an enclosed casing which runs in the hull.

Do I potentially have a problem that I'm just not seeing? If so, any suggestions on what I need to look for? Or could this just be normal for a boat this age? I'm not a mechanic, so I'm pretty much looking for obvious stuff.

Any advice appreciated.

A lot has to do with the use of the boat. It is 12 years old, and the steering cable and/or steering helm (box) can have wear.

Assuming this is a rotary helm, remove the plastic tube from the helm that contains the cable that is fed out the helm. Hold the bare spiral wound cable tightly so it can't move (its greasy) and move the wheel with the other hand. If there is a lot of play in the wheel, the helm is probably worn. Helms can not be repaired, just replaced. And its best to just buy a new helm and cable kit. Shop around, prices vary greatly, but most discount places have them for around $100 or so.

If its a rack helm, I am not familiar with those, maybe someone else can help.
