Boat stays in reverse after shifting from reserve to neutral

I have a Mercruiser 5.0 with an Alpha Gen 2 drive. When I go from reverse to neutral, for some reason the boat stays in reverse gear even though it feels like the throttle shifted fine into neutral. Forward to neutral is totally fine and the shifting doesn’t feel tight or make any clunking noises between gears. If I giggle the throttle in neutral when it does this, it sometimes, but not always, releases it from reverse.

Any ideas?

I should add it doesn’t seem to act up when the boat is on land with muffs. Just seems to happen in the water.
