Boat stalls on muffs going into gear

Ok I got my boat running today and was running to warm up the oil for an oil change. While it was running and since I just had the outdrive off to change the water pump and lube the u-joints, I decided to try to shift it into gear.

This is where the problem arose, the boat stalled every time I tried to shift it into forward gear. Does this mean my lower shift cable needs to be replaced or are there other things I should look for.
What has me confused is that in the adult only section it states this;

"The system is NOT designed to work when putting the drive into gear, or when the boat is out of the water and on muffs"

Any help is greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance,
Kyle

It shouldn't stall on muffs. Something is out of adjustment or not working properly.

We also need to know your drive and engine make and model.

May need to re-place lower cable may not you need to check the shift interupter switch.

sorry it's getting late, it is a 86 merc 140 with alpha 1. I ran out of light and thought I would seek some advice on here.
Thanks

Only Fwd gear? you claim to have done a pump replacement, could you have mis-aligned the shift shoes.Might want to pull the drive first
