Having shifting issues with my 1976(135hp) evinrude. When disconnected from cables, it goes into reverse and forward manually from the motor, but i can only get one direction(forward or reverse) when the shifter cables are connected. By the way, the cables have been replaced and are brand new.

Does the remote shifter itself work properly when the cables are disconnected? If not, the problem is in the shifter. Cables also need to be properly adjusted for this system to work correctly.

Assuming you did have the new cable in the neutral position when you got it adjusted to neutral.

I vote for. They sent the wrong cable / cables ..Not enough range to adjust it properly.

Also, you do know very well how to do this already?

Edit..................You MAY have a BIND in the shifter due to a part coming loose in there...........Had that happen. Came on with plenty of warning. Was lazy.

tip is correct.

im guessing that you have the cables in the wrong position in the shifter. try several combinations.....if it does not work every time......put it down ...walk away....come back later.. because you are not seeing the correct way to align the cables and barrels

When you say shifter, ur meaning the shifter box/trottle control at the helm? If so then yes its working. The action is free in the forward and reverse motions...... By the way, how do u properly adjust the cables. when u get them new I thought they were ready to install....... i thought.

Yea I'm assuming this was all done correctly. I didnt do it myself, I actually had it worked on at a local boat machanic shop where I live. They replace the cables, I went to the lake and had forward gear but was unable to go in reverse. I take it back and he makes an adjustment to the cables, I take the boat back to the lake and this time I have reverse but not forward. I was then told after the replacement of the new cables that my lower unit may need replacing. I was told to disconnect the cables and see if it goes in and out of gear manually and it does, rather smoothly I should add. So can this be a lower unit problem if its going in and out of gears? Seems more like some type of adjustment issue. Seems like a rather simple fix as well..... I just dont know how to fix it.

its an adjustment......

on the shift cable......turn the barrel that holds the cable in the direction you need.

Seriously.

Take the boat to ANY PLACE except the 1st place.

Get a second opinion...........Do NOT TELL the 2nd place ANYTHING.

Just say it looked so simple to do, That you tried to do it.

However........There IS THE SLIGHTEST chance that something MIGHT have come undone to cause a LONGER shifter travel to do the shifting.

Could be in the control station were you shift it. Or ...Worse in the lower unit.

Get 2 NEW & different marinas to try & get the cable adjusted. Maybe it is just adjustment.

If all 3 tell the same story. Wish I was there to check it out.

Never tell a different place ANYTHING. Play dumb & hope 1 is honest.
