Hi all
I've seen it mentioned here quite often about safe boating classes. I assume there is a "test" at the end. Can somebody (who teaches these coarses) post up a blank test? I'd like to know what I don't know!

Yes I know I should take the class and maybe I will, depends on how well I do on the test.

The BoatUS online course consist of, from memory now, six chapters. Each chapter has a test at its conclusion. One must score a minimum of 90% to proceed to the next chapter. One can repeat a chapter until a passing grade is obtained. My XO passed the course the first time 'round. The course can be accomplished at the students selected pace and schedule. The bride spent a total of approximately three hours and four sessions to complete the course.

Trust me, the online course is(was) far less involved than the eight hour, in person course that I completed through our local USCGA and
BassPro!

Post your answers to these multiple choice questions. No spelling skills required, just some basic seamanship. Classroom discussion to follow.

I would take the class and take some notes while reviewing the material. It is an interesting class. In MN 12 year kids take the test to operate boats and they pass it no problem.

...agreeing with "theBrownskull".

When I first took the class I had our 12 yo grandson along in hopes he could obtain his certificate to allow him to operate our SeaDoo on public waters......he passed with flying colors!

Since then he, and I have been to refresher courses and had his two step-brothers attend (both passed first time around).

WindDog....it is not the intent of the instructors to be difficult. "The pupil's success is the teacher's reward".

Maybe you will? Remind me to not boat in Calif.

Man up and take the course. You will learn something and if you take USCGA locally, you will also have the cameradery of others. Pleasant way to learn.

Well I will I'm sure, as far as you boating in California I have no problems with one less boat here.

Re: Boat safty classes?

http://http://www.boat-ed.com has online tutorials and practice exams based on the state where you need to get tested.

I took this course and, as a new boater, found it incredibly helpful. I think an in-person course certainly would be superior, but the online course you note is really informative. It also is free, up to the point where you take the final exam to get your card.

I don't think anything can beat a face-to-face and on-the-water course, but if I had to choose to encounter on the water a boater with the online course vs. no course, the choice would be easy...

Re: Boat safty classes?

When a person has a passion for any activity, it is only natural to have a thirst for advanced knowledge, to enhance the enjoyment of participation in the activity, safety considerations aside. If you have such a passion for boating, whether as a boat owner, crew member, or operator, then the quest for knowledge should come naturally. If a person does not have that passion, they will forever remain a casual boater, not that there's anything wrong with that. Perhaps such a person has a passion for baseball, and can bury themselves in the statistics for which baseball is famous, thereby enhancing their enjoyment of the game.

For some aspects of seamanship, there is no substitute for on the water experience. For others, formal education is the only way. I suggest that every new boater take an elementary safety course as a bare minimum: out of respect for yourself, your fellow boaters, and most importantly, out of respect for the sea.

I posted those questions, somewhat tongue in cheek, just to illustrate that there's a lot to learn ... if you have the passion.

blank test attached... :D Seriously though, the tests are meant for the average 6th grader to pass, and are often open book. Half of the time, you can figure out the answer just by reading the question carefully.
