what are the rules for renting boats? do you need a safe boating certificate?
Because I know that when you have your own boat you have to have a safe boating certificate.I am talking about renting small boats 10-30 foot boats.

Re: boat renting rules

I've rented boats and never been asked for anything but picture id.

I'm not sure why you think you need a certificate to have your own either.

It's a good idea to take a course and one in first aid/ cpr too.

Maybe you could just give a rental place in the area your looking to rent a call and ask them.

Or are you just wondering what's up with those ****** in the rental boats?

I think that is stupid because i have had non boating safety certified jet ski renters zoom 10 feet next to me and the rule 50 feet away. They have no idea what they are doing. They cause collisions and the state police was pulling them over and left and right.

When we were in Ft Myers Beach, we rented a 21' CC for the day. $280 and a picture ID and we were out on the water.

Actually, the lady asked if I had ever operated a boat before. I nodded yes, and that was it.

Generally, around here you need to be breathing.

And they aren't that fussy on that point.

Like most things, it depends on the jurisdiction you're in. Sometimes it goes right down to the individual lake or river.

In Minnesota, only kids have to have a certificate, and that depends on age and type of vessel.

If you boat much on weekends here, you're bound to wonder why everyone doesn't need certification. It's a zoo on many lakes.

In Maryland anyone born after July 1, 1972 must have a Boating Certificate to operate a boat.

In Ohio anyone born on or after Jan. 1st 1982 is required to have pass a state boating exam. This law applies to privately owned and rented recreational water craft.
