My first boat purchase is still a few years off, but I would very much like to get on the water beforehand. Is boat rental an option? I live within driving distance of the Ohio River. I would like to rent a small cruiser for weekenders at first, then maybe a week on the river.

Thanks
Bill Montgomery

Great idea...you need to take a coast guard safety course by law first...then have a blast

Bosco - I would hope that you would treat a rental the same way you would treat your own boat. I may need to rent it next.

Re: Boat rental

SoLittle, right you are. I took an online boating safety course and got the certificate from Ohio. But I'm still pretty ignorant. I'm taking my time getting through Chapmans. My question was really about the availability of rental boats of the kind I want to use (cabin cruiser on the Ohio River). I think the only rental ads I've ever seen have been for fishing boats or houseboat charters on lakes.

Re: Boat rental

Renting before buying is a good idea and not just boats, back in the 60's AVIS bought a fleet of Shelby Mustangs for rental, soon customers complained they didn't have much get up and go, seems some renters swapped the Shelby engine with stock engines,

Re: Boat rental

Bosco2, I see you are from eastern Ky.
I too am from the same area and I don't know of any rentals on the Ohio around Ashland/Huntington area.

And yes, treat it like it was your own cause someone else might want to rent it next.

Kind of a irresponsible response to beat it up and such.
