Boat registration in louisiana

Does any one know the easiest way to find out the person a boat is registerd by the registration numbers in louisiana. I tried calling wildlife and fisheries but they said they're not aloud to give out any info like that and they're very rude everytime I call.....thanks for the help

a lawyer can get the info in some states

A citizen can get it in some states, by going through the state, open records laws

Police can get it

The thing is that I bought a boat with no paperwork what so ever and the boat has registration numbers from 2003 and I would like to find out the person they are under so I can get the title in my name and register it

^^^ That's what you'd need here in TN. We don't "title" boats here in this state, you register them. Hopefully, LA is similar and you just need that BOS.

I hope you didn't pay to much for the rig. I hope the boat wasn't stolen.

According to Marine title web site:

You need registration paperwork for the boat.

You may not need a title, depending on the value of the boat.

You will need title and registration for the trailer.

You may have an option to go through the courts, and claim the boat was "abandoned" on your property.

Hmmm, I wonder what would happen if you called the police and reported that you hit this boat with your car, and need to contact the owner?
I suppose you would get in all kinds of trouble, never mind.

I sure don't miss Missouri. I've done four boats since I've been here in TN and especially love the option for a three year sticker.

According to the MarineTitle site if he can get the registration, he may not need to title it.

Titling is optional for persons who already own their boat and have already registered the vessel in Louisiana prior to Aug. 25, 2009 or those who are purchasing a previously-owned boat that is already registered in Louisiana.

OP, You may have paid for it and have Possession of it, but you do not OWN it until you have the Title/Registration in YOUR NAME!
The Trailer needs a Title in any event.

DO NOT Spend another dime on it until you have the paperwork straightened out. :grumpy:
Or you will not have a boat that you can put in the water. Just an expensive and unusual flower planter for the yard.

I suppose I'm just adding my voice to the choir, but really, be careful with that boat until you straighten out the paperwork. When did you buy the boat? From who did you buy it? Didn't they know who the owner is/was?

Yea I bought the set up super cheap and I bought it from a family friend and he never got paper work either and the person before him never did and does not remember where he got it from. I got a bill of sale but in louisisana you have to have a bill if sale everytime the boat is transferd to another owner all the way back to the dealer. I know louisiana is probably the hardest state on boat registration so I'm trying to find some way around all this mess

As I said earlier TN doesn't title boats, just registration - so it makes it a little easier. Signed bill of sale, and you're good to go. It's a little easier in one county vs. another though. For example, the county I live in now is a little more "well-to-do" and therefore rather more "official" in all of it's doings. When I got my first boat down here, I was in a much smaller, less "well-to-do" county ... and frankly, it was waaaaaaaay easier to get the boat registered.

It helped that the desk clerk at the county called the County Clerk (proper) "daddy."

There were some strange goin' ons last night. For a while the whole thread, all posts and title, looked like that. After I quoted Willie and posted, it cleared up and only the quote was garbled. I ran into another thread like that too. I don't know.
