Does anyone from NJ have experience with buying a boat out of state? Another boat has caught my eye in VA. Do you have to suck it up and pay sales tax in both states? I know NJ sales tax on boats is 50% of the regular state sales tax and VA is 2%.

Check the NJ and VA web sites for boat sales, etc. Should be just NJ, and any sales tax $$$ you pay elsewhere should be deductible from what you'd owe NJ.

If you are buying through a dealer in VA, sometimes they will add-on the sales tax without necessarily knowing where the boat is destined.

Cannot say about NJ or VA, but did see that NJ does provide a 50% tax deduction of NJ. I bought trailer in OH an paid about 8% tax (I picked it up in OH) so when I came back to KY there was no tax required to register. If I paid less then KY 6% I would owe that amount.

Suggest talking to DMV they would be able to shed some light

I looked at VA laws and it's not all that clear. It does say something about an exemption if you're a watercraft dealer. So maybe that's the deal...if the VA dealer knows it's going to be registered outside of VA, they won't charge sales tax.

Thanks.

Last month I bought a boat and trailer from a private seller in DE and just registered in NJ.

I paid around 3.5% for the boat and 7% for the trailer to NJ DMV.

The boat didn’t have a title, DE doesn’t title boats, so I needed a notarized bill of sale, the previous registration, a picture of the boat and pencil rubbing of the HIN.

The trailer was titled so a seller signature and price on the title is all I needed.

If the trailer is not titled make sure you get a seperate bill of sale. NJ wants to see a price paid to charge you appropriate tax.

It took me three trips to the DMV to get all this info a little at a time.

Hope this helps.
