Hi I am a new boat owner and figuring this out one step at a time. I have a 1983 Johnson 35 Hp. I have a small prop on the motor. I want speed and take off. Should I go to a bigger prop or stay small? What is the diffrence in the pitches of the prop, and how do the pitches affect the boat?

Re: Boat prop question

well you are asking for something you cant have.
Now unless your boat is small and light you cannot get both.
to accelerate fast you need small pitch and for high top end you need large pitch.
Now who says the prop is small ? small dont mean its diameter its the pitch size you need to worry about.

what pitch is your prop
what model is your engine
how heavy is the boat
what type of hull is it
how much weight in the boat incl you
and what condition is the hull in
and the condition of the prop.

once we know these things we might be able to help.

there is a lot more to it than just bung on a different prop and all is great

Re: Boat prop question

to add what phill already said, It's important to know what RPMs you're running. when you back-off on pitch (for example, to get on-plane faster), you'll increase RPM's (alot like downshifting to pass someone) if you go too-low on pitch for your rig, you risk red-lining and damaging the powerhead.
