boat plane

sorry about my lack of knoledge but what it means exactly boat plane when sailing and is it possible to plane a 9foot boat pushed by a 3.5 hp?

A boat on plane is on top of the water. It's actually riding on the water's surface tension rather than floating. Most sailboats don't plane, although some racing scows can. A 3.5 is unlikely to plane anything. Ballpark, the boat needs to be moving over 25mph.

Surely not likely to plane with a 3.5.You can plane a boat at about 12 to 15 mph.But your 3.5 isn't likely to get you there.
With a very light fast boat and a 80 pound driver it might plane.

For reference...The 3.5 will plane a 10' inflatable with a 139 lb kid in it. Anything over that would be lucky.
