I could really use some help....I had my boat in the lake over the weekend of the fourth( 1993 chapparral 3.0L with a yahmaha out drive) I noticed the boat was running hot (190 degrees) so when I got back home with boat I stuck the muffs on the outdrive and started the it back up, in no time the temp was rising so I shut the boat off. I took the 4 bolts off the water pump and noticed that the impellar was pretty much gone. (note the plate on the water pump had some discoloration like the paint got very hot) So I assume I am going to need a new water pump. By now I am wondering why the water pump overheated, so I decided to disconnect the hose from the bottom of the water pump (the hose that runs to the back of the transom) and I stuck the garden house directly into it and water came out of the outdrive from the intake vents where you would put the muffs, So agian I puts the muffs on expecting water to come out of the disconnected hose, but it didnt. So by this time I am really confused I decided to take off the guard on the intake vent on the outdrive and when I did there was pieces of broken rubber, so I thought it was stopping the water flow from the outdrive to the waterpump, so agian I put the muffs on and still got the same results no water. So at this point I dont know what to check. Where did the rubber come from? Is there a second water pump in the outdrive? Is there something Im missing? Note: Last year I had a shift cable problem and had to have someone put a new shift cable on that required the removal of the outdrive. Dont know if that matters....any help would be helpful.....

Re: Boat over heating

I would do a impeller change.
Thermostat change.
lastly engine water pump if this doesn't work.
Dies the engine temp level off @ 190 or keep climbing?

Re: Boat over heating

The engine temp keeps climbing. I went ahead and ordered a new impellar today, should be in tomorrow. I also went ahead and picked up a new thermostat. The guy at the boat shop where I ordered the impellar said that I probably would not get water to flow from the outdrive to the water pump with the garden hose...hopefully he is right

Re: Boat over heating

the pieces of rubber is likely parts of your impeller. Water will not come out anywhere if your impeller is eat up. It has to turn to circulate water. New impeller will fix that.
