When I boat my boat last July it was already named by the previous owner and I have not decided to change it. Are there any boat name superstitions I should be aware of? I'm not at all the superstitious type but was wondering.....just the same.;)

BTW, her name is 'Sis' and I haven't a clue what for, but she has been a really good boat for here original owner since 1973 and she's been good to me so far.

What say ye?

Does your boat(s) have a name and if so what is it?

Name it what you want. Drink plenty of your favorite alcoholic beverage, Christen it with a bit of it, then drink plenty more. But maybe you want to wait til you sober-up before operating. Otherwise you WILL have bad luck. ;)

I have heard it is bad luck to name it after an ex-wife.

There is supposed to be some mumbo-jumbo to recite when you re-name a boat.
Mine is Named Amanda Ford in 8 inch block letters. I am not supersticious but I have not re-named it because if I take off the letters, the gel coat will be a different color from sun fading and the name will still show. Of course, I cleared leaving on the name with the first mate --actually, the Captain-- She had no objections so I'm ok.
That may sound whipped, but when you have been married 35 years, you learn little things like that. When the woman is happy, the whole house is happy. When the woman is unhappy, the whole block knows about it. Ahh! women! Can't live with 'em----can't live with 'em!

Hmm, I think she will remain 'Sis' from now on. I feel I shouldn't be messing with a her name since she has been such a good boat all her life.

Thanks all,
Bill

Well Holy Water goes a long way. When I boat my boat we dosed it with Holy Water and re-named it "Knot Moms". Havent had a hicup from it aside from normal engine matnience. Not sure if she had a name before it but I think the holy water did the trick

Wow, what a ritual! I think Sis will remain Sis. She's a good old classic. I fired her up the last couple of days wanting to put her on the water but I still have too many yard chores to allow that yet. May will be a good month for 'Sis'.

May she find me fish to catch and provide many hours of family fun! :):)

Re: Boat naming superstitions?

I just have to chime in on this one.
When I bought my boat it had the name peeled off, it was faintyl called Minnow.
We renamed the Black Pearl

The very next boat trip the water pump blew and I had to get towed into a different marina, get a cab to the car parked on the other side of the lake Cab drives off, I realize my keys are still in the boat.
walk home, get my spare keys, drive to the the boat, get stuck in the ramp, drive the boat to a different boat lauch, walk back to my car, dig it out of the hole, drive over to the boat, to find it floating in the bay with two snapped mooringlines, swam out to the boat, left my boat keys in my pants at the dock, paddle back and load the boat up go home and get really drunk.

The next day I did the renaming ceremony and never had a problem since.
