I'd love to know... what do you guys make out there... as in the total compensation package. Are you guys hourly only. Hourly plus bonus. Flate rate only? A commission as in a percentage of the overall bill????

I personally think that marine mechanics are underpaid. I see the average labor rate in my area (New England) at around 100 bucks an hour. I see profit on parts at 30 to 60 points (except for oils).

So what do you guys make???? are you on flat hourly.... flat flat rate... commission... or some hybrid plan??

The reason I ask. Is that I am self employed as a mobil tech. And i have found so far that pricing a job is more like bidding. I am entertaining the idea of going to work for a company that has a government contract to fix coast guard boats. The money is fairly attractive... however i think in the long run i can do better myself.

Personally... right now i charge per job... and since i'm self employed it get all the labor plus all the profit on parts but i have all the bills to boot.
In working for somebody else I would personally only want the commission pay plan. As in I price out the repair.... and and i work for a percentage of the overall price.

What are you guys working for? What do you like about it... what do you hate about it? Do you think you can do, or are worth more???? and if so how?

IMHP the places around here that do the best are the Mobil marine electronics ,generator set installers and Canvas shops as they're generally dealing with deeper pockets

Most boat yards around here do NOT allow outside service companys other than a few small expections

You will find that there is a severe shortage of marine mechanics, mostly do to pay reasons. If you read the boating magazines, they all say the same thing. I have found that most older marina owners still think the old way, a mechanic is worth ten bucks an hour. That was fine when they were a dime a dozen. Today he rakes in the profit and still cries poverty. It's all bull. Marine Technicians today are not just mechanics. You can't find any marine techs out of work. that's because there is more work than there are techs. Even the boat and engine manufactureres are putting the word out to get people into the field. I'd bet that at some point, very soon, a tech with a good background can walk into a place and tell the owner this is what I want. the reason I feel this way is I work in this field and I have been made a few offers recently. I told one guy what I wanted to go to him, he said he wanted to discuss it further.
