Re: boat length vs outboard h.p.

Ahoy, Seabird. First of all, it would need to be rated for 450hp. That usually means 35' to 45' with a 10'to 12' beam at the transom. Some smaller boats may be rated that high, but years ago the formula was length times beam at the transom for boats over 16'. Formula or not, insurers and lenders want the boat to be rated for more horses than you put on 'em.

Good luck.
JB

Seabird,
The US Coast Guard has a publication titled
"Safety Standards for Backyard Boat Builders"
that can be downloaded from this USCG website: http://www.uscg.mil/d8/mso/louisville/download.htm

It will give you the formulas that you need to answer your question.

Capt Ron

Working the formula in reverse the answer would be 34' with an 8' wide transom.

Capt Ron

A 27' Scraab with twin 225's is a blast. But so is the 26' Thourghbred Velocity or 23' Wellcraft Nova. There's lots of great boats out there. What kind of boat are you looking for?
