boat leaking

i recently purchased a 1985 hydrasport, and after about 2 hours of sitting their fishing the boat had about 8 inches of water in the back compartment where the tanks and batteries are located. i was wondering how i can tell where the leak is coming from. the drain plug was kind of rotted so i bought a new one, but to no avail it still leaked.

Put the boat on its trailer, then fill with water, and see where it comes out. Back in the old days, when the only boat we had was our homemade one (which was of wood) we stopped the leaks by filling it with water to swell the wood which would close the leaks.
