boat is running sluggish..

I own a 2006 Hurricane powered with an outboard Honda 135 hp. Until last year I was able to get up on plane with only 4000rpm's. I very seldom had to go over 4500 rpm while powering in the back bays. This year 4000 rpm's won't even get me up on plane and today I needed to use 5000-6000 rpm's to stay up on plane. I am not an expert but it appears that the prop speed does not equate with the engine speed as it did in the past. Nothing else has changed. Does anyone have any answers what would cause this?

Thanks,
Peter

Welcome to the forums,

Probably a spun hub at prop ? Check or test other prop if possible.

After reading up on the prop hub it sounds as if that is the problem. My prop is ss so I will get the hub replaced.

Many thanks!!!

Sometimes hub's repairs don't perform as when prop was brand new, this is due to the fact that hubs are factory heat vulcanized, assume that in some brands you can find non vulcanized spare hubs which are easy to replace.

Sea Rider,

I just got off the phone with the only prop man around which will do repairs. I explained my problem to him and he said the cup is probably bad. He wants me to bring the prop in on Tuesday and he said it will take only 5 minutes to fix it. What is the cup he is referring to?

A standard prop is compossed of : prop body/vulcanized rubber/splined bushing. If you have a spun hub, inner parts rotate freely inside prop as there is no rubber adhesion any longer between mentioned parts, the longer a prop is used in that condition the worst power lose. Probably your prop can be fixed ? cross fingers as fixing properly cost much less than buying a brand new prop.

It's more likely that your boat hull is full of water. If it is a hub it's easy to check. Get a black marker and draw a line across the prop from the exterior of the prop on one side, across the hub and to the opposite exterior. Run the engine at WOT. Then look at the prop line. If the line that you drew no longer is straight, you have a bad hub. Cup refers to a bend at the tip of the prop blades to reduce RPM, it's not the problem and no one who knows anything about propellers would suggest that it could be the problem.
