I have been trying to get Boat Insurance on my 1979 StarCraft 16 foot SS. Allstate will not insure it because its 33 years old. I found that odd. Who would you recommend I check to get insurance on my boat?

BoatUS. Been with them for 5 years. Boat insurance is what they do. Prices are good, and they'll insure for agreed value. Claims service is excellent.

Last year, as Hurricane Irene was on the way, they reached out to all their policy holders on the east coast to advise them to haul their boats, with BoatUS picking up half the tab for the haul.

I have BoatUS as well, they were the most affordable even with insuring for agreed value.

I have Geico and I thank gd I did because I just ruined my whole I/O unit after I hit a submerged rock pile. Geico were fantastic and I was able to fix the whole unit with the money they gave me. It was seriously the best experience I have ever had with insurance. They basically wanted some pictures of the damage and an estimate to fix. The rep even told me how much they would depreciate the parts for the fix.

Progressive has been good to me. I have most of my insurance through USAA but they don't insure boats and refered me to Progressive. I took out my lower drive unit on an unseen underwater object a few years ago and the claim was handled expeditiously.

+1 for Home Cookin'. Check with your agent. I have auto, life, homeowner's and boat through Farmers (Foremost is a wholly owned subsidiary and handles their boat insurance). I've had outstanding service from Foremost and was able to obtain coverage by simply calling my agent. My premiums aren't dirt cheap, but they're very reasonable, and it's agreed value coverage.

State Farm - same place all of my other policies are. I've got agreed value coverage policy and the price is pretty reasonable.

For property only replacement coverage, boat, trailer and motor, this should be a small add to your homeowners.

To get more, liability, tow and more the guys above are doing great.

+1 for Progressive. I have had them for new boats and now have them for my restored Sea Ray. I have an agreed value significantly above NADA and higher liability (local marina requires it) and it it only costs $15 per month.

Neither Geico or State Farm would insure my older boat. Liability coverage only. Whatever company you go with, specifically ask about environmental cleanup should you have an oil or fuel leak and retrieval if the boat should sink.

I can only speak to my newer boat as it is insured with Progressive. No claims so far so can speak for their claims paying ability.

My newer boat is through my homeowners agent at Nationwide for full coverage agreed upon value and very minimal cost.

1979 fiberform here with an 83' johnson 75hp outboard...

I'm insured with a company that is owned by geico, for agreed value, and it covers many other things. I havent had to use it yet but Im sure its good to have, cost me $244 for the year, I have my three auto's and homeowners insurance with geico as well, so the multi line discounts were great too...

and Im glad to hear the one guy with the geico as well had good service when he needed to make the claim on the lower unit... Makes me feel even more safe!
