Boat Insurance...required?

I am buying a 60's era 16' runabout with a 33hp outboard. Is boat insurance a requirement or does this vary from state to state.

I dont think its required. but its smart ot have it. if you hit some gys 40 000$ boat you at least have someone else paying for the damges
And its not like boat insurance is that expensive

Required or not it is wise to have at least liability coverage for a reasonable amount.

I know it is a good idea but I wasn't sure if there were requirements like there are with cars. I am buying an old runabout in two weeks and wasn't sure if I could launch her with out insurance to test her out.

Then I am sure that depends on your local area / State / Province etc. It is a risk you take without insurance even for a short trip.

Whether or not you carry insurance boils down to one issue -- "how much stuff do you own!" If the answer is not much, there isn't much a lawsuit would get from you right now but it would screw things up for the future. If you have a bunch of toys, house, cars, etc., someone else will own all that stuff if you lose a court case. In my view, it is simply not worth the risk.

i pay 400 and change per yer through skisafe.com, its a subsidiary of geico.com

this is for 35K worth opf coverage for a 2001 24' aquasport that i owe lots of money on, so a older runabout should be WAY less than this!
