I am trying to properly idenify a boat that my brother is giving to me. It has been in storage for 5 years and his wife owned it before they got married. He is tired of paying storage on it and wants to get rid of it. He is not into boats so he can not tell me for sure what it is.

The best I can figure based on the pictures it that it is a 1987 Sear Ray Seville.

Does the 170 on the valve cover indicate the motor is a 170 HP?

Re: Boat Identification

Welcome to iboats

Yes the 170 on the rocker is the HP and that is a Mercruiser 470/3.7 liter 170 HP/

I would suggest you take some time and look around here and pay attention to our I/O section and consider getting a manual for the motor.

Good luck with it.

Re: Boat Identification

Thanks for the welocme note Bob. I was a little concerned about the power for a boat that size. It looks to be at least a 22ft. Will a 170 hp be enough power to push this boat?

Re: Boat Identification

Look on the transom and there should be a hull identification number. The first three letters and last two numbers are important.

The first three letters will identify the manufacturer and the last two numbers will be the year made.

Post the first three letters and we will guide you through the lookup ;)

Re: Boat Identification

I am not sure if it is a Sea Ray, I just tried to identify the manufaturer and year by looking up similar boats based on the pictures my brother sent me.

I am going to Colorado in a couple of weeks to hunt with my brother and father and I am bringing the boat home with me then. I will look up the identifiaction number as Bob suggested and post it.

Thanks for the help and I am sure I will have plenty more questions when I start working on getting the boat running.

Re: Boat Identification

THanks for the help with the identification of my boat. I towed the boat form Colorado to Texas this weekend.

The the first three letters of the identification number are SER and the last two numbers are 86.

So it looks like my boat is an 86 Sea Ray Seville.

Re: Boat Identification

I think you have a 1987 Sea Ray Seville 21' mid-cabin. See this url:

http://www.searay.com/boat_graphics/electronic_brochure/company1729/1C1_27_74DERNKD0517.pdf

I got this from the Sea Ray site, look under "Models", then "Past Models", then "model years prior to 2001 on the right hand side of the banner. You can also find the Owners Manual on their site. They show the boat being offered with Mercruiser 165, 175, and 205 engines. I'd hazard a guess that your boat was built late in the year, and the 165 standard engine was upped to 170 hp by Mercury. Looks like a really nice boat (you can tell I'm partial to Sea Ray's). I'd also recommend you join "Club Sea Ray", a set of forums devoted to Sea Rays.

Use the boat with this engine for at least a season (assuming it runs well). The boat was also offered with the 4.3L v6, which are pretty common, so if you want more power that's at least one option that would probably bolt right in.

Re: Boat Identification

Thanks gozierdt,

I had found the link to the document already on the Sea Ray website. I thought the boat was an 87 but the hull ID ends in 86 so I though that meant it was an 86 model.

As far as I can tell so far I only have cosmetic repairs to make. The gelcoat is faded and powdery, the deck upholstry is dry and cracked, and the deck carpeting needs replaced. Other than that the hull seems sound and the cabin upholstry and carpeting is in good shape.

I need to get a couple of batteries and see what happens. Wish me luck!

P.S. Is the Club Sea Raya forum on iBoats?

Re: Boat Identification

On iboats, there is a small Sea Ray section if you go down to "Owners group by manufacturer". But the bigger Club Sea Ray is here:

http://www.clubsearay.com/forum/index.php

You'll find interesting information in both the "Sport Boats" and "Classic Sea Ray" sections.
