I purchased a boat that had a very low production #,It is a LESSONS,It is suppose to be made by a well known maker. The Lessons company did the interior and graphics and stuff. The # is LNZ200001D787,I am figuring the D787 would be the production date,March 7,1987 as the boat is a 1987,I am wondering if the other #s mean anything to any one,Thanks

Re: Boat ID

Boats made after 1972 must have a 12 digit HIN (hull ID number). The first 3 alpha characters are the manufacture’s id code (MIC). There is a list of these codes on the USCG website. The next 5 numeric digits are the hull’s serial number. The next 2 alphanumeric digits represent the hull’s certification date code. That code reads as follows: the first alpha digit is the month of certification; the second numeric digit is the year of the decade of certification. The last 2 numeric digits are the year the hull was made. (Hey, none of this was my idea… :) )

Your hull’s HIN LNZ200001D787 is one too many characters. Foreign manufactures can have additional digits precedes the required 12-digit HIN that identifies the country the hull was made in. LNZ is not foreign. I have never seen a country code used but always stated somewhere on the certification label.

I’m thinking you have an extra “0” in there. If we take one out, your hulls HIN reads: LNZ 20001 D7 87. LNZ is the MIC; it is serial number 20001 for that hull design; certified in D (4th month) April of the 7th year of the decade; and finally, the hull was made in 1987. Your hull could have been made anywhere from April to Dec 1987. I wouldn’t be surprised if your hull was the first one of a model 2 or 20, hence the similar certification and manufacture date codes. The actual day of manufacture is never specified.

LNZ is the manf code for ‘L and S Manufacturing.’ They started making boats in July 1985 and are defunct as of Feb 1990. You can search the MIC codes here:

http://www.uscgboating.org/recalls/mic_database.htm
