Boat dropped out of gear at full throttle.

Hi, just bought an 85 candia 170 with a mercruiser 140hp alpha one outdrive about a month ago. was out on the lake the other day at full throttle when the engine dropped out of gear. We pulled the boat took the lower unit off replaced the impeller and water pump. I checked the shift cable that goes to the outdrive and it is connected so now i am stumped. any help would be appreciated.

If it quit pulling and also got hot (you replaced impeller) the coupler is likely spun.....

What, if any adverse effects happened to the engine? Why did you replace the water pump? Perhaps a shift cable adjustment to fix the gearing issue.

Perhaps the prop spun? When that happens, the motor revs high, but the prop spins slow or not at all.

Hi, i tried another prop still nothing, i replaced the water pump because my engine was over heating.

Coupler or upper gear set crapped.....
