Oh boy, that's a tough one.

Yes, BMW had drives and engines in the US during the 80's.

I'm responding to keep the thread alive.

Good luck.

Pretend you know nothing and unload the boat. The price of tuneup parts 5 to 7 years ago requierd a second mortgage. Don't even know it they exist anymore. Even if you could find parts, if you have drive problems service is almost non existant.
Don't throw your money into that hole in the water.

Good advice Don!!! But I suspect shortly after he is successful in selling it, the poor sap that buys it will be here posting the same question. Course, I guess the same advice would be appropriate again, why not??

The brother-in-law bought a very nice looking early 90s BMW 750(?) car very cheap because "hey it's a $60k car right?" Wrong. It sits in his garage because a power steering hose and the heater core leak and the combined bill for fixing them is close to $2k - parts only.

And I'd venture to say that parts for a car are a lot more common and cheaper than for a boat. RUN, as fast as you can unless you're just looking to be as unique as possible then open your wallet.

I would probably start of with something like this:

Pretend you know nothing and unload the boat. The price of tuneup parts 5 to 7 years ago requierd a second mortgage. Don't even know it they exist anymore. Even if you could find parts, if you have drive problems service is almost non existant.
Don't throw your money into that hole in the water.

Having owned one of the cars that was the basis of that engine, I can tell you it out performs any N.American iron I ever owned for longevity and performance (380Km). Hi nickel blocks and forged steel cranks help. Google Bavarian Auto Sports and you'll soon have access to all tune up parts. I didn't really notice any big difference in parts costs over the years as long as you don't buy from the BMW Stealer. The marine stuff will be more problematic, but you'll probably find if you serice and lubricate it regularly, it'll live long and prosper.

Don't compare automotive and marine. It just doesn't work that way.
I would bet you never drove your Beemer uphill, in low gear at 3800 rpm for hours on end, then let it set around water for weeks or months befor doing it again.

Uhhhhh, you're new at this marine thing too, aren't you?

Re: BMW Engine ? Yes..... Needs Help Please

I think he meant that the BMW engine lasts and lasts. The BMW engine design came from airplane engines such as the Focke Wulf and Messerschmidt, which ran at constant RPM's for hours on end. (Airspeed is regulated by prop pitch, not engine RPM) They have great low end torque and are very reliable. Easy to work on too, I know. 200k mile BMW's with the original rings are common. Shoot, the straight 6-cyl BMW engine takes 7 qts of oil.

The problem, just like with American car V8's is with the "Marine Stuff", not the engine itself. Starters, alternators, manifolds, ignition systems, etc. (not to mention the drive itself) would be practically impossible (although I say so without even attempting to google for them) to find.

The bottom line for me would be: There's probably a reason they don't sell them new anymore.

Re: BMW Engine ? Yes..... Needs Help Please

"In the mid 80's BMW made a decision to cease activity in the Marine industry. In North America the BMW parts supply was turned over to Mercury Marine. Factory technical support is virtually non-existent. Power and Sail boat owners with BMW engines have experienced increasing problems sourcing parts. Without parts or service, BMW engine owners had little option but to re-power with the likes of Volvo, Mercury etc." You can still get parts they cost though, but if propery maintaned then they are good engines and outdrives. When you do find a service manuel and I'm positive you can get one from BMW Marine. I would study it real good because you will probally be the only one who will work on it.
