I replaced the impelle on my 85 hp blue band 4 cylinder 2 stroke and now with the lower leg and I spin the propeller clockwise it clicks and it is extremely hard to turn counter clock wise,
It doesn't matter where I turn the little gear shaft thingy, which is extremely easy to turn I have the same problem.
I think the motor is late 1970 or early 1980 model

They should put these instructions as a page header:
This is how I do it in about 60 sec.: Turn the LU shift shaft by hand counter-clockwise until it
stops, then with Vise Grips tight on the bottom of the shaft turn it a
few more degrees CCW until it clicks into a stop, this
should be neutral - check by turning propshaft --
prop should spin freely.
Put control in N and go ahead and attach LU to driveshaft housing some turning of the flywheel will help the DS splines align.
Do not shift into reverse unless you turn the prop at the same time.

OK, Ratchet clockwise is normal for forward gear. If the shifter is NOT set to forward, you need remove the gearcase, and turn the shift shaft as Merc 850 says. Now, set the control to neutral and reinstall the gearcase.

Thank you Merc 850 and Chris1956 that worked fine now I have gears, but unfortunately there is water leaking out of what I would call the cylinder head just next to the water outlet hole so now I will have to find where I can buy a second head for it.
Thanks again you were most helpful

There is no cylinder head on that motor ,-----Just replace the simple gasket on that cover.
