I've seen opinion about the pro/cons of the two but never really paid attention.

I'm talking to the wife who is talking to a out of state husband so...

what year and thoughts on the two

I'm thinking that's probably a 1981-83 and may or may not be crank rated power in lieu of prop rated.

I recall reading that Mercury started transitioning to prop rated earlier than other manufacturers, so it's a guess. I know that the brown stripe 1985s were prop rated.

Brown was used in 1984 and 85. They dropped the Compression a bit after 83
1982 was the Year Mercury started Prop Rating all 6 cylinder engines
However some late 81s might be Prop Rated
Any 115 with a Serial Number up to and including 5050763 would be Crank Rated
5050764 and above would be Prop Rated

Thanks. She did find the serial number last night and confirmed your years. Now just to get the price dropped because it is 20 years older than she thought...

Follow up question since I'm a relative newbie to mercs.

My current 82 50 hp has the tnt pump inside the boat. The 115 will have the same? The seller sold the boat seperate from the motor and hoping they didn't remove so I can get them to lower the price.

Yes, the TNT motor is likely separate. Replacements are available, but they're pricey. Not to mention that if the motor is gone, the hydraulic lines might have to be replaced as well. More bucks.

Cool, my current should work correct? Not sized to a particular motor?

I believe so. There were identical pumps on my 50 & 70HP Mercs. The prior owner of one of the 70s told me that he got the pump from a 90 as well.

1983 and older 115s would have the Pump in the Boat TNT

That is one of the Joys of Mercs for many yrs, as the variations of the Decals were often slight, over the years.
