blue oil in lower unit

i bought some oil and went to change my lower unit oil.
the oil that came out was clean & BLUE like fresh 2 stroke oil, and it REEKED.

since i bought synthetic & premium lubes, i used the premium stuff and will try to flush out the rest of the blue oil, and switch to the synthetic in the spring.

has anyone seen 2 stroke oil in the lower unit before? and was any harm done?

just the latest in a series of stupid things i found with my rebuilt motor.

JT, if it smelled more "stinky" than "oily", it probably was gear lube. Different mfr's have different colors so it's not like it had to be pre-mix oil if it's blue.

You should also be able to tell by the consistency, pre-mix wouldn't be stringy whereas gear oil, with EP (Extreme Pressure) additives will be when you rub it between your fingers.

If there wasn't an excess amount of metal in the oil, and the lower unit shifts well with smooth-feeling propshaft bearings, I wouldn't worry about it.

Just flush/refill with your synth oil in the spring and keep an eye on it.

Agree, I have yet to change gear lube that did not have a foul odor.
The blue color is no big deal.Like he said, different colors for different brands..
If it was 2 stroke oil it would have been very thin compared to gear lube.

Re: 2 stroke oil in lower unit

it was the stinkiest oil i've ever smelled.

had 0 particles in it, another good sign.

i work mainly with products from my local canadian tire and hadnt seen a blue lube yet.

the synthetic stuff i use is golden, and the plain old premium is darker.
