I own a 1990 mercury black max o/b which has now blown a piston. I'm looking for the value of the engine and an opinion if it's worth fixing. Thanks.

Re: Blown Piston

Kenthrussel, thanks for the response. The HP is 200 and unfortunately, I'm not a a mechanic. I'm trying to figure whether it's worth fixing. I'm selling a 1990 23' mako cuddy with the engine. A buyer went out on a test ride and the boat ran sluggish. We pulled the head on Sat. and found the piston. The wall doesn't appear to have been scored. The boat broker has an in-house mechanic who seems pretty good. But he's throwing figures around like $2-4000 to fix it. That's where I'm at. I could just sell the hull for 11k and tell the buyer to get his own engine. Book on the hull is 10-12. Any comments will help.

Re: Blown Piston

hi again sounds like you had preignition if there was hole in the top of the piston, my motor was running sluggish too just before the rod went,if the cylinder wall was not scored you could probaly just get away with replacing the piston which is worth around $180 plus a complete gasket set as the motor will have to be tore down to replace it,although if you go that far you should check everything and replace bearings and rings as well then you will know what you have.beleive me i know marine work is expensive i am a mechanic myself but not on the marine side but i bought the shop manual and am rebuilding it myself. If you wanted a interesting challenge attempt it yourself.Where do you live as i have some connections for parts in my area.

Re: Blown Piston

Kent, thanks again. There's no hole just what appears to be scorching of the piston. The wall as I said had very minor marks and the mechanic didn't think it was scored enough to cause problems. He was going to look further to see if there were any other problems. Do you know where I can go to find a value for the motor? Again my decision to sell the boat with a repaired engine or just sell the hull is where I am now. If I decide to sell it, I would be more than happy to give you more info. We never ran this motor over 5000 rpms. So this is really a surprise to me. I live in Rye NH.
