have a 1965 Aristrocraft with 120 2.5 Mercruiser I/O engine. This boat has been a challenge and I know all of the saying about boats. I refuse to give up :)

I blew the main water intake hose that goes into the manifold. Do I have to change the whole hose or can I cut the damaged section and add on?

Thanks

That's the exhaust tube from the riser. The smaller hose is the water intake.

After 50 years, it's worth replacing the exhaust tube with a new one. Piecemealing the thing will most likely lead to failure again.

Were you having cooling issues prior to the blow out?

Yes, that make sense seeing I changed the smaller water intake hose. The previous water intake hose was leaking and caused some over heating. I replaced the clear water intake hose with the black tougher one.

It was my first time on the water with the new hose. As soon as I opened it up, there was nothing and getting hot. But then again could it have been the smoke from the exhaust?

I thought that I saw water coming out of the exhaust tube? Are they hard to replace?

On an Aristocraft, not that bad. Others boats are lot tougher.

Have you changed the impeller yet? That's one of the first things to do with a new boat with unknown history. Also with a Mercruiser. you need to check the drive bellows, they get old and start to leak. You don't want that.

No, I have not changed the Impeller yes. I was thinking that I should change the impeller. I will need to look at the manual. I am not even sure what a drive bellow is.

Raise the drive up all the way and look underneath. There are two rippled rubber tubes. The large one on top is the drive bellows with the driveshaft through it. The smaller one is the exhaust bellows which is connected through the transom plates to the blown out tube inside.

Yes, you need to find a manual if you don't have one. IOs have some special maintenance procedures, like winterizing, that must be done properly. Not hard to do, but things need to done on a periodic basis or you can all sorts of problems. You don't want that.

Yep, I brought the manual with me to work. I am a novice but willing to learn.

No Title

I took my boat to a mechanic and he took off the drive (without my permission). I don't have a lot of money and I have already invested plenty (learned lots of lessons). My neighbor has a real nice engine jack and he offered to help me. I have read that you have to lift the engine to replace the exhaust tube. I am going to change the water pump and impeller. I was told that the bellow seems to be in good shape.
