So its shot. Need to replace the port side head gasket on my '93 Evinrude 175. around 900 hours.

so, i really dont think i warped anything...? cooling was running full stream, so i hope its "no big deal" i can take the head off, clean it up, replace gasket, retorque, and replace the impeller and be good to go....so what am i missing here?

Any and all advice would be appreciated.

the clues were quiting after running perfectly, then heavy misfiring when trying to restart. let it sit(cool down) and it would start up and run fine. until the third time i got it to run again(for more than 1 minute, and usually about 20) when it would not turn back on after quitting. Other clue was the heavy salt deposit around the head gasket of the engine on one bank of cylinders. next clue was steam exiting through the exhaust when cranking. right now it will sputter, but not stay running.

Thanks!

A good strong tell tale stream is a good indication the water pump is working but it is NOT and indication that the engine is being properly cooled. Overheating can be due to lots of things but typically it's thermostat, bypass valve, clogged or restricted water passages, missing or misplaced water deflectors, lean carburetion due to clogged carbs, to name just a few. Did the overheat warning horn go off? If not, fix that before the next trip.
