Hi Guys I have a 2001 dodge ram 1500 that will always blow the reverse light fuse when I hook up my boat trailer I also have a signal problem when im using the running lights niether tail light will blink but theywill light up. I have tested the trailer with a differnt truck and everything works fine. I bought the dodge new and installed a wire harness that hooked directly into my trucks wiring system at the tail lights. Thanks for any help

Re: blown fuse

So let's eliminate the truck as the problem since the wiring is plug-and-play. That leaves the trailer. The light issue is a ground- make sure your trailer is grounded properly to the truck. Not through the hitch or the safety chains. <br /><br /> The reverse deal is somewhat of a mystery. Does your trailer have brakes? There shouldn't be any power to that trailer plug at all unless you have a reverse lock-out solenoid for your brakes. If so, it's shorted or the wiring is damaged. All you can do it trace it and look for damage. <br /><br />UFM82<br /><br />UFM82

Re: blown fuse

I'll take the approach that says the other truck is wired wrong, as is the trailer and the new truck is wired correctly. However, if the new truck has the 7 prong round RV connector and you have a 7-to-4 pin adapter, to connect to the trailer, there may be a problem with the truck connector as my son-in-law has burned up two trailer harnesses (new trailer, properly wired). Its ok when he uses the separate flat four connector. He's not electrically savy and I haven't trouble-shot it. Just a heads up.

UFM82 sees the Same Picture as I do..........<br /><br />The Blinker Issue is the Ground,...... Or Actually,.. Lack of it........<br /><br />And,... <br />It probably Is all about a Brake Solenoid issue,.... The truck's going to a dead Short.....SomeWhere......<br /><br />I have a 7 pin round commercial plug on My truck,+ use a molded 7 x 4 adpater,.... <br />I've had 1s with No Ground path,.. Right out of the package......<br />'Course,....For Back-up,.... I've got the 1 I Built down in that Toolbox,..... Somewhere........<br />Jumper Cables from the Truck Frame to the Trailer Frame will diagnose That.........<br /><br />You'll No Doubt need a Test Light to figure out the Brake Solenoid/ Short issue........

Re: blown fuse

I have the same problem with my trailer light setup. I have since change out the lights on my trailer for this coming season but have not test it out yet. What I did new on this set up is I make sure that the wiring on the trailer has good ground and hopefully that would take care of the reverse light fuse blowing.

Re: blown fuse

01 and up dodge trucks have a seprate wireing system for trailer lights and brakes, did yours come with towing package and wireing. or did you get one of the inline kits that plugs into the tail lights. If so blinkers may be overloaded. backup lights shouldnt even be connected to a 4 wire flat plug, if it is its wired wrong on the pickup side. questions questions questions? It sounds to me like the backup light wire is wired to the trailer ground, I think your problem is on your pickup wireing.

Re: blown fuse

If you are still having trouble with your lights get under your truck and unhook the four wire plug that hooks up to the adaptor you installed. On at least some of the ones i've run across the four wires that come out of the adaptor are Left turn, Right turn, tail lights, and backup lights. Check them with a test light. If you bought the whole kit it came with a wire that plugs into the adaptor and goes to the trailer hook-up.It has the three wires plus a seperate wire for ground. If you made up your own wires from the adaptor back make sure the ground is hooked up to the truck frame and not the fourth wire on the adaaptor. <br />I sure hope this makes sence. If by some chance the backup light got used for the ground wire it sure would explain your troubles.<br />Hope this helps. Steve
