so after working on this for almost most of the winter, i blew a piston on my 86 50hp. i have a parts motor 76' 45hp. i pulled the head on the 45, and i see a gouge on the upper wall.
so, now i have two bad power heads, both are rebuildable, but what do i do with them? i picked up a merc 40hp, and this is what im going to replace the force motors.
i have spent alot of cash fixing up the 50, all new everything under the hood. coils, ignition, fuel pump, carb, reseal of the lu.
do i sell off the parts on ebay? can i sell off the parts here? motor is really clean there is still the original lap marks on the cylinder walls.
oh yeah rebuilt the props too.

So is the 50 good or bad? if it is the really clean one why not use it? If there is one gouge on the 45 why not hone it out and check the compression? same with the 50. You can borrow a hone from the auto parts place. If you can get 120 or so psi you could have at least one good season on the water. Where are you located? I would be interested if you just want to be done with them.

yes i could tear apart the force, hone out the bore, buy one new piston and a set of rings....... i am just afraid of messing up. yes i have a manual (force factory), but still, its a lot of labor. i really want to get out fishing :)
i live in norcal, a little far from idaho. my kid is going to courdelane (spell?) this summer, but dont nkow if the airlines will let him bring two motors on the plane, and i dont think it will fit in the overhead or under the seat.

Dino, if you already bought the other motor then slap it on the boat and go fishing. Come back later and fix BOTh of those motors. They're completely doable. Those motors are clean as heck. Go drown a few worms for awhile. When you're done with those motors you could probably resell them and recoup all your expenses.

I'd rather be fishing right now also. Unfortunately it snowed here yesterday morning and right now there's one unholy thunderstorm going on. Worst spring in a long time for Michigan and the Walleye are just stacked and waiting and the Steelhead shut right down after an initial start up. Uggg! Even the spring Bass spawn seems to be on hold.

The up side is that I haven't detailed my boat this good in ..... well, forever.

swampthing,
i never walleye fished, heard they are really tasty :) im a trout troller, last outing two weeks ago, nailed about a five pounder and a 2 pounder. lost a few, and blew the motor. at least i hit 30-31 mph (per gps). the motor ran really good. oh and both motors has the original paint. i touched up the outside leg and lower unit. the 50 had 160 pounds after i decarbed the motor.
the parts motor is really clean too. amazing how these motors werent really run much.

dkonrai, swamp thing is right. I totally understand the NEED to fish, and the lengths I go to get there :) I say next winter you look for a used piston, maybe ebay, put new rings on, replace the case half seal, and viola your 50 is brand new again. I am a proponent for squeezing every last day out of the fishing season that I can, so if you have a running motor to get you out right now the 45 and 50 can wait. If it were me, I would repair both and sell the ones I don't need just as swampthing suggested. Oh and its not as hard of a job as it may seem.

Re: blown 50hp, and 45hp now what? what to do with the motors?

the bad thing is with the economics, even if the motors ran, there is no value here in the bay area. no one seems to want a force/chrysler motor. the spare i bought, the guy was asking 300, then 200, then i bought it for a lot less than 200. idk why they dont sell running or not. if it was a merc or jonrude it would sell much better.
so, i am running out of room and the mrs wants a cleaner yard :) so i need to dump two motors. even if i get them running it would be more money spent (which is hard to come by)

Always looking for parts, thats why for the right deal a road trip is not out of the question. You near Shasta? If you can't get rid of them locally you may try ebay, although not alot of the abundant Chrysler or Force parts are actually moving on there. The Force/Chrysler name has been badmouthed quite a bit over the years, and with technology improving so much its hard to sell someone on the idea of a discontinued motor. I love my Chrysler 55hp, its easy to work on, relatively simple to diagnose issues, and believe it or not its pretty easy to find parts for. I understand the $ issue, this is why I run a 38 year old motor rather than a brand new 4 stroke merc. You can pm me about the motors if you like.
