I have a 2006 Mercury 50hp 4 stroke EFI that has 1800 hours on the clock. It has been serviced and maintained every 100 hours since new. Lately the motor is blowing the fuse under the top cowling near the regulator while the ignition switch is turned off. Why is the fuse blowing?

Re: Blowing Fuses

burnt fuse = high current = short to ground or shorting component. To check for shorts, connect a headlight bulb where the fuse connects. This will now be your short indicator. Wiggle all cables, wires and connections while watching headlight. If it lights up while wiggling, you have found a short to ground in that area. (rubbed through insulator etc.) The headlight may illuminate somewhat when turning components on, but will go brilliant when a short occurs.
