Got a yamaha 50 horse. worked fine last fall but when we checked it out this season when we turned on the ignition it blew the in line fuse (going to the solenoid)

Can't find any shorted wires. I can cross out the solenoid with the switch off and it will engage the starter without blowing the fuse.

Is the short most likely the solenoid or the ignition switch (or something else)

So I take it you jumped the starter solenoid to energize it and turn the starter and that worked. Did that also by bass the fuse? Or did the fuse not blow and the started spun?

You can remove the wire to the starter at the solenoid then turn the key. The relay should engage but the starter will do nothing. That will narrow down your search to the harness.

What happens when you remove the feed to the starter from the relay?
