I watched KVD catching bass on his bleeding shad spinnerbait on You Tube. He says he believes in the red hooks so much that he won't throw a lure that doesn't have a red hook anymore. I ordered 3 bleeding shad spinners and when they got here they didn't have the red hooks like the picture in the catalog. I called and the folks I bought them from said all of the ones they had, have black hooks. I called Strike King and the premier plus bleeding baits don't have red hooks as pictured all over the computer and they are going to change that. So now I have 3 bleeding shad spinnerbaits for the price of shipping them. For that price I will add my own red. I have one I not only painted the hooks red but I added a little to the silver blades. I probably have the bloodiest looking spinnerbait out there now. So the bass should just love it.

Re: Bloody Shad

I have started to carry a red permanant marker with me - works great for adding a touch here an there. Like adding it to the band on my spinner baits and lighter colored jigs.

Also use it to mark running depths of new crank baits, just under the bill right where it connects to the bait (similar location of where a gill flare would be) [patent pending ;-)] lol

Re: Bloody Shad

I started using the red Mustad's earlier this year. I didn't really see how it was going to make a difference at that time and it's hard to tell now if they do or not. Fish change on on a dime so red might help today and not tomorrow. Certainly pink and chartreuse yarn balls or the old standby red/white spin-glo has worked for many years and you can deny that the wedding ring in just about any form seems to always bring a bite. Red hooks, I don't know, I think you could convince just about anyone that it works if they manage to put a fish on. Personally, I think the shape of the KVD Elites is what changes the game, not the color.

Re: Bloody Shad

Red is the FIRST color to fade away underwater. Might be red near the surface, but it's gonna be black or grey once it gets down a bit. I don't buy into the whole red line/ red hook fad. Might be a good change of color to add a little realism to a surface bait, but absolutely pointless in a deeper running bait. Of course KVD swears by them and says he wont use anything else. That is exactly what sponsors pay him to say.

My thinking could be wrong on this though, given that some fish may have eyes adapted to compensate for this filtration of light wavelengths, but if that were the case why would quite a few deep water fish be red if it made them more visible to predators?

Their blood is still red on land. Must be something to "red" as weakness. It has to be visible, in some way, to the dwellers of the deep.

Re: Bloody Shad

for the last few years I've been using red hooks with live bait in both salt and fresh water .... don't know that they actually do any good but I like them and tend to want to believe that they do ..:D.. I have no such preference on plugs and other artificial bait, I am perfectly comfortable to use whatever the manufacture installs

Re: Bloody Shad

I was surprised at how hard it was to find the S.K. bleeding bait trailer hooks and when I did they were about $2 a pack of 5+SH. I ordered 3 packs after I found out they would ship them all for $2. These are like the ones that are included on some of the spinnerbaits. The other name brands were either a longer hook or had the point turned downward. While looking for these I found a lot about using the color red on lures and then I remember watching a video where a guy was catching huge bass in California while trolling swim baits. He added a treble hook as a stinger and accented the gill plates, RED,on his quality swim baits. Like I said he caught huge bass trolling his doctored swim baits.

Re: Bloody Shad

I got a chance to try some spinner baits the last week or so. The original double willow with the silver blades didn't work as well as one with a 4 1/2 gold willow and a smaller silver colorado blade. I caught one nice bass and a small musky on this spinner. They were both hooked on both hooks. Fishing has been kind of tough with all of the north wind we have had lately. We caught other fish too but not on spinner baits.
