Blocking calls without caller ID?

Ok, I admit, I like caller ID. Not that I am dodging anyone, I just like knowing who is calling before I decide to answer. Yes, there are some calls I leave to go to voice mail when I am busy and don't really need an interuption at the moment.

So lately there seems to be a new trend, people blocking their caller ID when they call. Makes me wonder what sort of person doesn't want to be identified in a phone call but that is a side issue. Anyhow, I signed up with the local telco so that now when people call with their ID blocked they get a recording telling them this number does not accept calls with caller ID blocked.

So far it seems to be working, its amazing how often they suddenly call back without the block. ;)

Call my land line you get the machine, call my cell when I am off work I answer, work only has land line because I don't work OT on call in. Ringers turned off so don't hear. Might take 5 months to get back on recording, did I say that work only has the land line number that I am never at. lol

Sometimes technology is ridiculous. You're gonna identify yourself as soon as you say hello, so why try to fight the inevitable.

Hmmmmm. Too often callers do not identify themselves. I think that is rude, but I don't ignore calls from unidentified callers. . .at first, anyway.

The ones that really annoy me are the ones who you don't know from Adam who start out calling you by your first name as though you are old friends, as in: "Hey, JB! This is Joe from the State Police Benevolent Association. . . " A pitch for bux immediately follows.

x2 ^^^^ I hate the "I'm following up on our conversation from few months ago" when I know I've never talked to them before.

Yes, your telephone company can fix it so you can not receive blocked caller's. The blocked caller usually gets a message that you line does not accept blocked calls. If they are serious about calling you then they are forced to unblock their number and try again.

UNKNOWN CALLER PRIVATE NUMBER

Oh yeah, I'm definitely going to press the answer button on that one. N-O-T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It works this way for me: if the Caller ID shows a name and/or number I recognise, I answer. Otherwise, FAGEDDABOUTIT!!!! I'm retired now so there is no chance it's a stealth customer call. If they really want to talk to me, they can leave a message. I figure that I answer less than 2% of the calls I receive, both land line and cell, and NONE of them ever leave a message. Must not have been critical. Seeya.

The vast majority of the calls I receive on my land line have area codes like 866, 877, 876, etc. Some of the same numbers call me over and over, sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. Pretty bad when you start to recognise spam numbers.

If you punch these numbers into Google, you can sometimes find out what the call was about and read comments from thousands of people who are going out of their minds from getting calls from these numbers. Interestingly, most of the commenters keep answering the calls and mostly end up with dead silence at the other end. Many of them try to call the number back which generally leads to a non-working number. When they DO get to talk to someone, they are generally a credit repair scam.

So basically, if you want me to answer your call, don't block your caller ID and DO be somebody I know. Otherwise, I mute the ringer and take another sip of the glorious golden.

Re: Blocking calls without caller ID?

There are many systems that do not show caller ID from individual lines. If I ignored calls from unidentified callers, I'd miss out on a good 25% of my business. Had we ignored those calls during the last two weeks of my father in laws life, we would have missed all calls from hospice workers who provided a considerable amount of comfort and sustained the medical aspects of his life.

If you want to live like a hermit in a cave, then go for it and don't let the world communicate with you or have your hollywood agent answer the phone for you.

Same here. My work had a blocked ID. They asked me why I was never home, I told them I am always home. They my boss asked why then didn't I answer the phone when he calls? I told him I always did when I saw who was calling. I asked him have you been calling? He almost yelled yes. Hum, I said, maybe your ID is blocked. There was silence for the rest of the day. the next day the phone rang and it was him. I didn't answer!

I almost always answer. I say "hello". If I don't get a hello back I ask "What are you selling?" 95% of the time followed by click. As I told my wife just about every call in is someone wanting money from you. The exception is friends and relatives - sometimes.

With me it is a privacy thing,my home is my sacred place for solitude and your not invited in unless I know who you are. These credit card scammers call all the time even though I am on the do-not-call list......I do not understand how this is allowed to happen. 40 years ago we did not have caller ID but we didn't have telemarketers either so if the phone rang it was from someone you knew or a wrong number.

Re: Blocking calls without caller ID?

We ditched the traditional land-line at home a few years ago and went voice over IP. We've since even trimmed back to a MagicJack, and it's worked fine. Because it's rather non-traditional, it seems to cut WAY back on the solicitation calls.

Just pray that "card services" doesn't get your number because they ignore the do not call list and their robot calls will attack you relentlessly......I get several a week and if I could reach through the phone I would strangle somebody.

Re: Blocking calls without caller ID?

The do not call list is a complete waste of time that could have been better spent boating. It basically puts you on a list of active phone numbers so that scammers know that their is a live body on the other end of that number. I put my land line on that about 4 years ago and actually increased the number of trash calls. Didn't bother to put my cell on it and only get a couple of trash calls a month on it.

Yeah, I guess maybe I'm a little bit of a hermit. I don't care to waste my time talking to people trying to sell me crap I don't want. Certainly when I was still working I had to take every call that came in on my work phone or work cell. No real need to now. And, as I pointed out, I have a very good answering machine for anyone who wants to explain why I should call them back.

Same here. Cell only and I'm on the do not call list. Only calls I get are people I know and the Dr. office or the pharmacy calling. It's great. No waisting time on the phone tell people I'm not buying.

Re: Blocking calls without caller ID?

Cell and Magicjack, the Magicjack has it's problems, busy sometimes, have to have Internet access, and computer on (sleep is ok), but well worth 20 bucks a year.
When we go out of county the wife has to have Internet so I take the laptop, Magicjack, and a cheap wireless phone. The laptop stays open and the kids can call in and we can call out, with no international charges at all.

When we stayed in the Dominica Republic for a month it was fine, but had to buy international minutes in order to call the Realtor just 7 miles down the road.
Made me smile, 2500 miles, all the phone calls you want free, 7 miles, .03-5 cents a minute.

The no call registry must work, only the &^%$&*() political calls and they are not restricted, ... go figure.
So I answer all calls, IF NOT ELECTION TIME.
