When bleeding brakes do you bleed the brake cylinder farthest away from the master or the nearest first? Got only two brain cells left and can't find either right now.

Howard

Solittle
Bleed the nearest first. You want to push any air or old fluid out. So you start the clean fluid down the line and bleed air and old fluid out the first wheel you come to first. Then continue down the line until have clean fluid with no air to the last cylinder.

Boatist,
according to Everything I've Ever Known, Or Read,
You've got it Backwards.................

On an Auto, You Always start at the Right Rear Wheel, then the Left Rear Wheel, then the Front Right Wheel, Finally the Left Front Wheel..........
I've only been Wrenching for about 40 years,
And I've Never Heard of Starting at the Left Front Wheel............

Farthest to Closest...........

According to the manual for my Windstar:

If it has non-ABS brakes the order is right-rear, left-front, left-rear, right-front.

If it has ABS the order is left-front, right-front, left-rear, right-rear.

Damn - - I love the consistancy here. Bondo says the farthest - - Boatist says the nearest - - and Edw needs to know if I have ABS bakes on my trailer.

Of course I don't want to offend anyone here. Lets see - -- - As for Edw I can't offend him too much as my trailer does not have ABS brakes - - and no air bag either. That leaves Bondo & Boatist. Here is what I'll do (don't tell anyone please!!).

I'll get a quarter and write Bondo on one side and Boatist on the other. I'll flip the coin. If it comes up Bondo I'll bleed the farthest tonight. If Boatist I'll do the nearest tonight. Tomarrow I'll bleed the brakes again and do it the other way.

That way I'll bleed the brakes twice, make double sure there is no air in the lines and not offend either Bondo or Boatist.

Think that'll work?

Everyones right,

I was taught farthest first but after checking 'autotech' bible it seems that most post 1998 vehicles are nearest first (difference between diagonal split dual & triagonal split and throw in ABS to the mix).

As you are talking about a trailer, then old school is the way. IMO.

Aldo

SoLittle Bondo
Appears Bondo is right farthest first.
I have always done it the other way and it works.
Once a year I suck all the fluid out of the master cylinder and fill with new. Then bleed the nearest brake until the fluid is clear, next bleed the farthest away until it is clear. Brakes end up hard with clear fluid. Still site below says farthest first.

http://www.championtrailers.com/techsup.html#bleed_brakes
