I ended last season with black smoke. After starting the engine , it was running rough, then black smoke, then died. I have not tried to start yet.

One other time I was using the boat, it gave me some black smoke and rough running. I was having some timing issues, so I turned the boat off, moved the distributor, and when it started up, it ran fine.

Any ideas? I was thinking to drain the gas tank and start with fresh gas.

oh yeah.....I have a 1998 Volvo Penta 3.0L 4cyl that I replaced with a new 3.0L 2 years ago.

Check to make sure the choke is working.
and get that timing set properly, you need the shunt to put it into base timing to set properly. If the timing is off, it will damage the engine.

Black smoke = rich fuel mixture. Sounds like a carb issue, if so equipped. But as Don stated the timing has to be set correctly to begin with.

I had an auto mechanic help me the begining of last season with the timing. He read the book, but was not aware, or did not have the tools to put into base timing.

1) could the engine be damaged without me knowing, or would I have seen symptoms.

2) should I have a marine mechanic set the timing, or is it easy enough with the right tools?

Thanks,
Erick

Time to buy a factory manual.

The first thing you need to do is determine EXACTLY what engine you have. Just because your boat is a 98, doesn't mean the engine/drive are.
What is the full model number or serial number of your engine.
This should help. Volvo Engine ID
