There's an overtemp switch on one of the heads, hooked into the same alarm circuit as the oil alert.

Who knows what fate it has seen in it's 20 plus years of life, though.

Re: Black Max Temp alarm

i have a 91 ranger with a very good running 91 mercury blackmax xr4 150. it just recently started making a beep-beep-beep-beep noise while it is running down the lake. i checked the oil tank and resovoir and am getting oil to the engine. i also checked the sensor and seems to be working right but heard the metal washer is supposed to be attached to the top of the float and mine is not-could be the problem or i think its the black box module that the blue wire is going to. ANY SUGGESTIONS BEFORE I TAKE IT TO MY MECHANIC AND PAY $ WOULD BE HELPFUL------THANK YOU---SUPERFLUKE

Just because the engine tank if full doesn't mean the oil pump is working.

Get a maintainance manual and do the troubleshooting yourself. It isn't rocket science, but it is detailed.

If all the inputs, which are tank switch, pump pulses, and ignition pulses, and the alarm still sounds, it's the module. Otherwise, follow the track to the fault.

hope it helps
