1994 Johnson 50hp- runs perfect, very strong and smooth. Has never been a problem motor at all- hit the key, fires right up and runs great. BUT, it constantly gets this thick, black, gooey oil running down the front of lower unit. It isn't unburned fuel- the carbs are clean and don't leak. It looks like burned fuel/exhaust to me. Maybe a leak from the exhaust chamber? Is there a tube there that can break? It doesn't cause any problesm, just looks bad. I had both covers off this engine this spring when I did a major clean-up on it and got it sparkling. Could not pinpoint the source then so I figured it must be from under the powerhead. Thus, I figured exhaust. Any ideas?

UFM82

Usually that type problem is caused by a faulty powerhead to adapter plate gasket (the gasket under the powerhead). If the gasket is faulty for any reason between the exhaust outlet port area and the top motor mount, it allows that substance to enter the m/mount area, after which it flows down the front of the exhaust housing as you mention.

OK, so I gotta pull the powerhead. That's what I figured.

Thanks!

UFM82
