I found a good deal on a custom Sunbrella cover for my Skeeter. The only thing is, it is jet black. Does anyone have any experience with a black cover.
I am concerned it might get too hot and fade quickly, or worse get the interior of the boat too hot and harm the seats and dash. Any thoughts?

I agree with your reservations about black, Tree Guy. I would have the same reservations about red.

White, gray and blue, in that order, are what I would prefer.

Good luck. :)

Tree Guy
I have a sunbrella Pacific blue cover on my boat. Where I store it it gets afternoon direct sun. I raise the front of the trailer so the cover not square to the sun. Still with a recording thermeter it reaches 140 degrees F any day the out side temperature is over 100 degrees.

Thanks for the responses. Even though the price is great, I think I will pass on the black.
I would hate to see my interior ruined.

The black color may be why the deal is so good. Someone in a northern area might be able to use it. I live in Florida and would never concider a black vehicle. Just too much darn heat.

Re: Black cover?

If you bought a boat cover from a manufacturer and they offer black as color, they felt that their product is safe for use in all temperatures unless they post a disclaimer stating that they are not responsible for damages caused by their cover. We purchased a black boat cover from ******** and it burned our vinyl. We have tried to get the manufactuer to stand behind their product but they are slow to do the ethically correct thing and pay for the damages. They are stalling like no other!!! I bet they would react real quick if the damages were to their boat!!! I contacted an attorney regarding consumer rights regarding damages caused by products, the manufactures is liable for damages unless they have that disclaimer- buyer beware statement. We have a black bimini from Sunbrella and there has never been any damages caused by the bimini (folder against the boat or bimini up) Check with sunbrella before you buy the cover. If a black cover would look best with your boat and Sunbrella stands behind their product, you shouldn't have any problem!

Re: Black cover?

I do not know of any warnings from boat manufacturers, but I occasionally work on sailplanes / gliders. Surprising enough, they are made with the same types of glass and gelcoat. Some of the newer competition ships are made with carbon though. All the manufacturers have limits on the amount of black and deep colors you can use in the gelcoat as well as any type of deep colored covers used. The deep colors will damage the gelcoat and there is one reported case of a failure because the owner (in AZ) used a dark green tarp (doubled over) to cover the wings. It was determined that the excess heat caused a failure of the composite bonding of the ribs. The ribs of the wing separated from the upper surface causing the wing to fail.

I'd stay away from any type of dark colors.

I'm currently making a black mooring and windshield cover for my 22ft century hardtop. Its not sunbrella as I prefer top gun. I will let you know in a couple months how it works out. On a side note I made a dark brown sunbrella camper canvas for my last boat. Had it for 2 yrs after that and didn't have any problems with the brand new interior I made for it.

Tree guy:

I have a Sunbrella Pacific blue cover and it has three poles with the vents and it still gets extremely hot inside. I think the vents do help however as I have no damage after ten years.

Living in Florida and having owned a couple of dark colored cars, I can sum it up in two words: Never Again.
