Black Box

Hi all,

I just saw something in Cabelas Catalog that I'm curious about. It's their item # IC-014891, called a "black box".

It appears that this piece of equipment puts some type of electrical charge on a downrigger line. Am I looking at this thing right?

I'll bet we could get Schematic to rig up something to give a real jolt. :D

Geez! What's next? Miniature depth charges? How would you like to see those launched off the back of a 70 mph bass burner?

djohns,

You never heard the story about the Game Warden and dynomite.

You going to sit there and talk or are you going to fish???????????

I had a friend that used the old crank phone years ago to bring big catfish to the top. Never tried it myself.

This device is sold in NZ and there was a TV program where it was featured. The fishing guru used the device one side of a bay and fished following the instructions. Then he fished the other side of the bay without this device. He caught more fish without it!
Then again our fishing magazines have reports from people who wouldn't be without one. They cost a lot as well!
Ross

That black box your talking about is similar to catching night crawlers. You take a welder or a battery charger and drive two metal stakes in the ground, wet the area down, hook up your leads, turn it on, and bingo up come the worms! I wouldn't doubt someone some where will sell these as a positive charged bait that will cause the fish to bite! "NOT!" you have to watch those commercials and use simple common sense. It is always easy to sell something to people that just dosen't understand electricity and electronics.

Hello DJohns19,
Quite a few fish are attracted to small electrical impulses such as when a fish is in distress it gives off small pulses. The way I understand it is the Back box tries to duplicate this impulse and "supposedly" will attract fish. I don't think I would want to spend the money on it, $99.00. For a few more dollars you could get a real nice fish finder that is proven.
Just my 2 cents.
Oh SSMAYFLOAT, Make sure you wear rubber boots and unplug your charger before collecting night crawlers. An electric fence charger works great also.

Re: Black Box

Hears the deal, your boat has an eletrical charge around it when it is in the water fishs are atracted to a certain voltage usually around .45 to .70 volts. When you put your downrigger wires down in the water they enhance your boats electrical field. Any charge lower or higher will make the water around your boat less atractive to fish and if you have an electrical problem and are sending out high voltage around your boat you will probably end up repelling fish which you know what that means. To test take a volt-meter and attach the positive to the downrigger wire with it in the water and then take the negative and attach it to the negative pole of your starting battery. This will tell you if you need to check your electrical system. If your electrical system is fine then you need to purchase a black box. This will correct any problems with your electrical field around your boat. Happy fishing.
