I bought a new GM base engine last September from Michigan Motorz and have had nothing but problems. First, the EST ignition was defective and I was only getting half the specified spark advance. Then, when installing the replacement, I noticed the distributor gear was halfway ground off. I posted about this problem, so some of you may remember. Michigan Motorz only solution was to have me crate the entire motor, including starter, manifold, carb, alternator, and cooling system back to them. I didn't want to do that so I replaced the camshaft myself and that fixed the problem.
Everything was great for about 10 hours of operation, when suddenly the engine lost most of it's power. Compression checked out good. Some how the base timing shifted to >12 deg ATDC. Reset the base timing and I encountered severe detonation as soon as I hit the throttle. Changed to my old centrifugal ignition and the detonation persisted. I then set the base timing to 6 deg ATDC and that reduced the detonation, but didn't eliminate it. Temperature gauge is normal.
As I said. Bizarre. Has anyone here ever seen something like this?
