There's several old "canals" that run between the Dead River and the St.Johns River in the area just below Blue Springs. These "canals" are a bit narrow and overgrown with vegetation and suitable for Kayaks, Canoes, smaller boats with their Bimini tops down, great for bird and wildlife viewing and photography. This is a good time of year to go since there should be less bugs due to cooler weather. If you stop by Hontoon Island State Park(a couple of miles above Blue Springs) they can give you a map about the canals and where to go. Blue Springs is a favorite of ours for swimming. A few miles on down the river is Highbanks Marina and Restaurant for good Burgers/food/gas/ice. This is the most unspoiled, pristine and beautiful part of the St.Johns River with lots of birds, gators, manatees, fishing, etc. Good Luck!:)

The canal you're prob looking for will be labeled on the map as the entrance canal to Wekiva Springs. I ventured a few miles into it with a 20' T-top boat and had to turn around.

We've been up that Wekiva Springs River a few times and that's the most alligators in one area that we've seen:eek:...still a beautiful river!:)

It is alive and growing. It is loacted just a bot South on the St Johns below the Blue Springs Park - it will be on your right side - it is easy to navigate - you can also reach it the back way from Hoontoon Parl area. It is not the entrance to the Wekiva River!
