alright.....new to the boating stuff. i have a 97 fisher fish and ski, 18', and am wanting to put a bimini top on it. does it need to mount on the rail coming back from the windshield, or to the side? also should i get one where i can walk under it standing up....or on fish and skis are they lower?

Great place by the way.....lots of info to take in....thanks for the input

the mount point will be the center of the covered area.... you will need to consider the location that the 4 straps will connect..... as for height that is a judgement call..... it may look a little funny up high but crouching is annoying
one possibility is to get it tall and cut it down if you don't like it.... much easier than "stretching" it

I always measure mine so i can just barely walk under it. The ones that are really high just look funny to me.
The last one i installed i had to cut down about 14 inches.

Depends on your boat's layout and how you plan to use it.

When up:

1. Sometimes it is in the way trying to fish.
2. Hinders walking around unless high enough.
3. The higher it is the more useless it is other than at high noon.
4. Has a speed limit which may interfere with your planned boating operation.

When down:

1. Where do you put it?
2. Is moisture trapped within whereupon it will mildew?

Height is pretty much a personal preference thing the lower the more shade BUT you are always ducking , stooping, etc was not an option for me. I am 6'3 and to have to duck down that far(standard height) was a deal breaker for me. So I took a bunch of measurements and got one that just fit under the tower looks good and was much cheaper than a custom one or a dedicated tower mounted one. I got it here at I boats and so far am very pleased with it. Took about an hour to install and has saved me a lot of sun exposure here in utah it can be relentless at the desert lakes. I would not reccomend mounting to the windshield frame if you can avoid it. The price of boat glass will bury you IF you can even get it. Not worth the risk in my opinion. Good luck I used some pvc that I had around to mock up the height and where it would go with a tarp and it helped make the decision easier when ordering.
